WE ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE OUR SISTER ORGANIZATION
WINNERS - STARFISH AWARD

J&L Golden Retriever Rescue in Point Clear, Alabama has been honored as a recipient
of the 2005 GRCA-NRC’s Golden Starfish Team Award.
The Starfish Story

A young man is walking along the ocean and sees a
beach on which thousands and thousands of starfish have
washed ashore. Further along he sees an old man,
walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one
starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the
ocean.

"Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?," he asks.

"Because the sun is up and the tide is going out and if I
don't throw them further in they will die."

"But, old man, don't you realize there are miles and miles
of beach and starfish all along it!
You can't possibly save them all, you can't even save
one-tenth of them.
In fact, even if you work all day, your
efforts won't make any difference at all."

The old man listened calmly and then bent down to pick
up another starfish and throw it into the sea.
"It made a difference to that one."

Many of the Goldens and Golden mixes rescued
following the 2005 hurricane season were
fostered and adopted by Sunshine GRR here in
New England.

Our thanks to all those generous volunteers who
stepped up efforts to create the largest network of
foster homes and volunteers we have ever had!
Out of this disaster came hope – and that hope
remains for the thousands of Goldens and Golden
mixes who languish needlessly in shelters
everywhere.

Many have criticized bringing Goldens from the
South here to New England – and while there are
many issues each region must take responsibility
for, our commitment to every Golden in need
remains steadfast.

Naysayers argue that taking one dog from a kill
shelter is not going to make a difference, but we
believe as the old man in the Starfish story did -
"It made a difference to that one."  And that is
why we do what we do.
