Save a Life - Become a Foster...
“Fostering a dog isn’t a lifetime commitment. It’s a commitment to saving a life”
Because Sunshine Golden Retriever Rescue does not have a shelter, we rely solely on our foster home network to provide a safe and stable temporary home to get our dogs ready for adoption. It’s simple: the more people who open their homes for fostering, the more dogs we can save. It’s a rewarding way to give to our organization and it’s a critical part of what we do. Most importantly, it’s fun!

To Mae, from her Family
Mae, foster mom-dog, left us in October 2017.
You may have a dog through SGRR that Mae helped along their journey. Mae had been a foster mom dog as long as we have been fostering. In collecting my thoughts about what to write about Mae, I realized it is because of Mae that we became foster parents. I found a courtesy posting on J&L/SGRR website in the south for Biscuit. I took Mae and we went to meet Biscuit. Mae approved of Biscuit so we adopted her. When Martha brought Biscuit to me, I said I now have two dogs but used to having three so if you need help call me. Never say that to a rescue group. Within two weeks we were foster parents. That was 14+ years ago. If Mae had not liked Biscuit, none of this would have happened.
Mae was a rescue too. She came from Mobile, ALA. Fortunately someone dropped her over the fence during the night at a small no kill shelter. Mae was not retriever or lab. She was part pit bull. We called her our “dirty little family secret.” We said she was a boxer/lab mix. She was a kind, loving, easy going family member. Once she became a foster mom dog, she let everybody into her home, share her house, bed, toys, blankets. Her only line in the sand was keep your nose out of her food bowl.
A card from Mae’s vet said “We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps we still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan.”

Foster Poem
There I sat, alone and afraid. You got a call and came right to my aid. You bundled me up with blankets and love. And, when I needed it most, you gave me a hug. I learned that the world was not all that scary and cold. That sometimes there is someone to have and to hold. You taught me what love is, you helped me to mend. You loved me and healed me and became my first friend. And just when I thought you'd done all you do, There came along not one new lesson, but two. First you said, "Sweetheart, you're ready to go. I've done all I can, and you've learned all I know." Then you bundled me up with a blanket and kiss. Along came a new family, they even have kids! They took me to their home, forever to stay. At first I thought you sent me away. Then that second lesson became perfectly clear. No matter how far, you will always be near. And so, Foster Mom, you know I've moved on. I have a new home, with toys and a lawn. But I'll never forget what I learned that first day. You never really give your fosters away. You gave me these thoughts to remember you by. We may never meet again, and now I know why. You'll remember I lived with you for a time. I may not be yours, but you'll always be mine. - Author Unknown |
