Meet Team Sunshine!
Our Volunteer Board of Directors
Cheryl Alter
Cheryl has been a foster parent with our rescue for approximately fifteen years after she adopted one of the courtesy posted dogs back in 2005. Cheryl relays, "If my memory serves me, Martha brought Biscuit to me. As we talked, I said I was use to having three dogs, was down to two dogs and if you need some help in the future call me. Within two weeks, I got a call asking for help. The rest is history."
After having lived most of her live in the DC metro area, Cheryl moved to Pensacola, Florida in 1997 and is enjoying her retirement.

Bonnie Coppage
Born into a military family, Bonnie has lived in several places, but Baldwin County, AL is home. Bonnie's family consists of her husband, Nick, and their son, Wyatt, an avid soccer player. Their family has nine pets in total, 6 cats and 3 dogs. They enjoy boating and water sports, traveling, and going to the ball field. Bonnie has worked as a veterinary technician since 2004 and not long after that met Lisa Hume. Animal care has been her passion for her entire life, from saving frogs when she could barely walk until now, almost 38 years later. Bonnie is a seasoned Vet Technician and joined Sunshine to help find forever homes for their dogs. She also works to help cats who so desperately need homes and someone to love them.
Jessica Dixon
Jess began volunteering with SGRR in 2012 after her family adopted from the organization. Over the years, that has included everything from maintaining the SGRR Facebook pages and helping with the yearly calendar, to updating the blog on the SGRR website and answering inquiry emails from interested adopters.
Jess shares, “Becoming involved with rescue has been such a rewarding experience. Sunshine is an amazing community of people that work selflessly on behalf of the dogs in our care. I consider myself blessed to be a part of this wonderful group of people, of whom many have become close friends.”
Jessica lives in Southeastern CT with her husband, Shane, and their fur-kids, all SGRR rescues - Tanner, Molly, Oliver & Franklin.

Michelle Hamed
Michelle joined the Sunshine family in 2013 after being adopted by Memphis, her SGRR blind Golden Retriever who has now gone to the Rainbow Bridge. She had also adopted Boston from SGRR who is also at The Bridge with Memphis. Looking for a way to give back and pay it forward, Michelle began by giving many a pup a ride in her Golden taxi, while sometimes serving as an emergency foster and babysitter to those who have begun their journey home. Centrally located in Connecticut, when an opportunity arises to meet a dog, Michelle is one of the first to raise her hand. So passionate about the dogs, Michelle has become the Northern Intake Coordinator, Freedom Ride Coordinator, and finds adopters for any young dogs rescued in the North. Additionally, she helps to coordinate vet care and training, and conducts telephone interviews and home visits for adopters. She says that she gets paid in fur and has quite the collection to show for it!
Michelle’s all time favorite responsibility is when a dog comes into rescue in the North, needing a little extra care. She ensures that the dog has a place to stay, takes care of the vetting and training arrangements, and makes sure the dog has lots of belly rubs and toys and treats. And when the dogs continue their journey to their forever home, she always sheds a tear.
When she’s not volunteering or working at her paid job, Michelle spends time with Ernie, also an SGRR alumnus.

Heather Hume
Heather is a lifelong lover of dogs - really, she loves all animals though she recalls dogs, in particular, stole her heart at a very early age. Born in Mobile, Alabama, she grew up in two beautiful and very different places: lower Alabama and southwestern Montana. From the age of eight, she enjoyed the company of dogs and cats and was also entrusted with a beloved horse, Count, who she often rode to visit "nearby" friends and neighbors! After decades in Montana, Heather returned to her roots on the Gulf Coast, in 2023. She feels very fortunate to call fellow Board Member Lisa Hume her aunt and is indebted to Lisa for introducing her to SGRR. It truly was meant to be and she's delighted to be part of the SGRR family! Heather works with our rescue "babies" from the day they're brought in until they are ready for adoption. She spends time getting to know each dog and loves taking pairs or a group of puppies out simultaneously. Seeing the transformation from a cowering, distrusting and frightened dog, who over weeks of daily interaction becomes playful and even joyous, is the most gratifying feeling in the world! Working with SGRR is the highlight of her day and, on those special Saturdays, she can't wait to see pics of the rescues with their new families. At home in Fairhope, Heather enjoys spending time with her pack (Paco, Frisco, & Odie) and on hot summer days, cooling off in the nearby Gulf of Mexico. Working with rescues has been instrumental in her journey towards healing as she navigates life after losing her precious son, Walker, who passed at age 19 in December '22. Walker's younger brother, Beckett, attends Montana State University, back in Bozeman, and visits his mom every chance he gets.
Lisa Hume
Rescuing since 2000, Lisa Hume is our unsung southern hero who is directly responsible for saving the majority of the Southern Sunshine dogs taken in. Additionally, Lisa rescues many other non-golden dogs by referring them to other rescues and networking with rescue advocates throughout the South. Lisa is responsible for getting each dog vetted and ready to travel north. Convincing vets to give rescue discounts, begging for space in clinics and boarding kennels, taking dogs to medical specialists hours away, moving them from foster to clinic to clinic - so we can save just one more that day. Lisa also spends her days getting to know as many of the dogs as she can so we can place them in foster or adoptive homes in the north. She also arranges for the videos and photos we use, and takes care of the Sunshine van - plus all the other many things that we are not even aware are happening.
Lisa and her husband enjoy life in Point Clear, AL, with their two Golden Retrievers. Boating and fishing are among their hobbies. They are also devoted footballs fans of Alabama's Crimson Tide.

Cheryl Kewley
Cheryl started to volunteer after she and her husband adopted Lucy in June of 2016. After being very impressed with the adoption process she wanted to become more involved. Starting with phone interviews and home visits, they quickly became involved in fostering dogs as well. Cheryl and Mike continue to foster when needed. Being mentored by Donna Tonic she has recently volunteered to help with the placements of young dogs that come up from the South.
Having grown up with dogs all her life, including raising a puppy who was deaf (quite a challenge!) she is very devoted to helping all dogs find their forever homes. Her husband has had a variety of therapy dogs and enjoys the challenge of training. Both of them have a strong love for all dogs, especially those in need.
When not helping Sunshine, Cheryl works full-time as an office manager for a large electrical contractor. As retirement nears, she hopes to be able to devote more time to volunteering and helping dogs in need. In her spare time, she has recently picked up hand crocheting blankets and selling them at craft fairs!

Ava Pillinger
Ava has been volunteering with our rescue since 2006. Presently, Ava initially reviews all adoption applications and assigns volunteers to start the process of evaluation. She also compiles a list of cities where a prospective adopter requires a home visit and coordinates that visit with a local SGRR volunteer. Before retiring to raise her children, Ava was a travel agent which explains her love of travel adventure. Having lost her beloved golden,
J J, Ava directs her energy to helping to find suitable, loving parents for our dogs in need.

Jeff Stevens
Jeff Stevens is the proud owner of numerous dogs from SGRR He rescued his first pair, Brutus and Brody, from SGRR in August 2010 and since then he has wanted to give back to the amazing group of volunteers who save so many dogs each year. These two dogs changed his life forever. He also rescued Maya in 2012 and then Arlen came along. He now has Digger and Dudley to join the pack. Jeff had rescued 4 dogs before and his amazing experience dealing with Donna T, Lisa, and Martha changed his outlook on the adoption and rescue process. Jeff had rescued Goldens from other groups but found SGRR to be the most exceptional and well run rescue group of all.
Jeff helps maintain the adoption database and also happily does home visits and evaluates dogs who are relinquished in the northeast. SGRR honored Jeff’s Mom, Meredith, in 2014 by naming a dog after his beloved Mom, who was the biggest dog lover ever. Meredith was one day away from being euthanized and SGRR pulled her from the shelter and saved her life because of her character, strong will, and heart - just like Jeff’s Mother.

Donna Toncic
Donna Toncic has been part of the SGRR family since 2005 when she and her family adopted Sadie. Sadie arrived from AL just 2 days prior to Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf area and the need to immediately rescue dogs soared. Donna’s heart ached seeing all the dogs that needed to be rescued as the result of Katrina and she began volunteering with SGRR. Like many of our volunteers, she started out doing vet checks, phone interviews, and home visits. She then initiated the adoption follow-up program. As SGRR grew, she was asked to oversee the volunteer group and the processing of applications. Presently, Donna focuses on SGRR’s days to day operations. She works hand in hand with Lisa Hume in obtaining particulars about the dogs in the south to create bios for them, and then ultimately matches the dogs waiting for loving homes with the approved applicants in the northeast. A techie geek at heart, Donna also acts as SGRR’s webmaster.
When she is not rescuing, Donna works as a medical insurance billing specialist. She can often be found running or hiking near her home in Mercer County, NJ that she shares with her husband, Ken, and their dogs, Princess and Mika. Donna & Ken have 2 married sons - Craig and his wife, Vanessa, and Jay and his wife, Jen, who have three children of their own now. Donna is an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and is also a member of the Society of the Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge. She enjoys traveling, cooking, genealogy, history, blog writing, and spending time with her family.

Beverly Trice
Beverly is SGRR's treasurer with her attention on keeping our rescue in the black. Until recently, she & her husband lived in the Atlanta area where she had been President of a U.S. subsidiary for a global corporation. Both of them had traveled heavily; at last count, some 85+ countries. Beverly’s soulmate, Sparky, took a dim view of being left at home, so he adopted the strategy that each time the luggage came out, he’d do his best to hitch a ride by pretending to be asleep in the suitcase.
Beverly lasted about a year in retirement before she realized that she wanted to do something that made her feel she was contributing with the same energy that she’d had in her professional career. Her love of animals led her to SGRR!

Our Supporting Volunteer Staff
Denise Apsey
Denise began volunteering for SGRR in 2009, soon after adopting senior Veli, their
first rescue Golden from SGRR. She started out helping with phone interviews, vet checks, and home visits. Living in Northern NJ at that time, Denise also assisted at
the Spring Valley, NY transport stop. For a time, she also filled in for Candy, handling the senior adoptions. When Denise and her husband were transferred to VA in 2012, Denise took over posting the Sunshine dogs on Petfinder and Adopt A Pet, and assisting Donna with website updates and other tasks, as needed.
Denise's husband, Bill, retired in 2014 and they now live in northeast Florida. Denise and her husband have 2 sons; Doug who lives in Boston, and Chris, who graduated from West Point and lives in Atlanta, GA. Before retiring to raise their 2 boys, Denise was a Customer Service Manager with General Foods, Mastercard, and also T. J. Lipton Foods. Their current SGRR rescue is beautiful Belle!

Lucie Beliveau
Lucie has had dogs since 1986, mostly adopted, and says in 2016 she was lucky enough to find SGRR. With Candy’s help, Lucie and her husband John found Corina, a senior, and her pup Copper. Wonderful dogs! Shortly after that, Lucie began helping Ava with Vet Checks, Phone Interviews and Home Visits. In 2020, Dougie, 14 years old, found a new home with their Copper and in 2024, they were blessed with 2 year old Sierra and then their sweet 7 year old Gryffin. Most recently, Lucie joined Candy, Pat, and Kim as a Transport Liaison and is also helping Candy and Mary find homes for Seniors. Lucie and John have also assisted in several drives, to make it easier to get the dogs to their new homes, when the destination is greater than 2 hours away. Lucie tells us, "It’s a good feeling to help after all we have received from SGRR!"
Ken Elterich
Ken has always loved dogs and cats, starting at about 8 years old with a Collie named Shep. Later he had two Golden Retrievers, and a white Shepherd all living long healthy lives. He has adopted numerous cats and is currently sharing his home with an orange tabby named Maxwell. His first SGRR rescue was Cody, a Golden Retriever mix, who adopted him in 2008. Ken and Cody had 14 years of companionship before Cody crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. During his time with Cody, Ken fostered a Fidelco Guide Dog for a year during its initial training. Ken spent time with both dogs doing community outreach in nursing homes and rehabilitation hospitals.
Hobbs, a senior from SGRR, came into his life soon after Cody. He spent the last year of his life enjoying his time with Ken. Archie, pictured with Ken, is his third Sunshine rescue, a wonderful Yellow Lab mix who came to him via the Louisiana bayou. Ken immediately began volunteering with Sunshine, after adopting Cody, in 2008. Ken has done Vet Checks, Phone Interviews, and Home Visits for Sunshine. He now mentors parents of newly adopted dogs.

Heidi Fitzgerald
Heidi has had dogs all her life. Her mother tells her her first word was 'doggie', not 'mommy'.
When their beloved Golden, Laci, died, they were very busy and weren't in the market for a little puppy. One of Heidi's sons asked if they could foster some dogs, and they decided, as a family, that was a great idea. They had three successful fosters before they had a foster fail in Brady. He was a good 'ole fella from Alabama and just stole their hearts. They have fostered many dogs since, and hope to foster many more in the future. Heidi's friends ask how she can possibly give so many away? But to Heidi, it's a gift being able to know so many wonderful dogs...
Heidi volunteers as a Foster Team Administrator and knows that by helping them move on to their furever homes, she can open their home to yet another dog that deserves to be living their best life in a loving home.

Nancy Fremed
Nancy joined Sunshine in 2010 when she adopted Rigby. Nancy tells us, "I was so impressed with the volunteers that helped bring me Rigby, that I started to volunteer doing Vet Checks, Phone Interviews, Home Visits, and Fostering." In 2015, Nancy fostered Wendy, her first breeder girl. Wendy was the most fearful, traumatized, shut down Golden Nancy had ever seen. Nancy eventually learned that Wendy's behavior was common in breeder dogs. Nancy recalls, "The adjustment process was slow and painful, but the outpouring of support from all the Sunshine family was so amazing that it carved a place in my heart forever." After adopting Wendy (renamed Callie) she adopted another retired breeder girl Luna, and then Willow and Cedar, her 2 current girls. Her husband has a strict 3 dog policy. Adopt or foster, 3 is the limit! Recently, Nancy has been mentoring adopters and fosters of breeder dogs. In addition to loving her own dogs, and her visiting grand pups (some are also SGRR pups), Nancy is a full time grandma of 7, soon to be 8 and a semi retired nurse practitioner, working in a free clinic in Northern NJ, providing women’s health.
Janru Galloway
Janru lived in Mobile, AL all of her life until moving to Fairhope, AL in 2012. She has been a Mortgage Loan Originator for about 33 years. Her love of animals, especially dogs, goes back to her childhood. “We always had a dog growing up," Janru tells us, “My passion and breed of dogs has always been Golden Retrievers. At one time I had 3 Goldens and 1 Lab. Needless to say, we had a house full. Two years ago, I lost both my precious Golden and Lab of 12 years to cancer, both in the same month. I decided then that I could not go through the sadness or loss again of losing something that was so dear to me and something that I loved so much. But, after a year and a half, I began thinking about volunteering for a rescue. I knew Lisa Hume and knew her intense involvement with Golden Retrievers. I pursued finding her and found out that she was in need of fosters of which then worked in to preparing the transport packages for dogs in this area. I had NO idea what went into this rescue and all the truly dedicated, caring, and loving individuals that are so determined in helping these deserving precious babies. It has truly been an eye opener and a fulfilling experience.”
Tiina Giordano
Tiina started volunteering with SGRR in early 2020, when adopting their second dog, Arlo, from SGRR. Tiina has been drawn to animal rescue and took this opportunity to immerse herself in all things rescue and SGRR related. Tiina brings a digital marketing skill set to the team, given her prior and current marketing career experience. Because of this experience, Tiina has been dedicated to fine tuning and expanding SGRR's online presence through social content strategy and development. Tiina hopes to bring more awareness to animal rescue, SGRR's efforts in saving dogs in needs and helping to educate others in the value of adopting and not shopping. In addition to leading the social media efforts, Tiina was previously volunteering to help with applicant vetting for SGRR through phone interviews and home visits. Outside of SGRR, Tiina is an animal advocate and volunteers with two local shelters. Tiina and her husband, Greg, are grateful to SGRR for all of the work that the team does and for bringing Arlo, their SGRR dog, into their lives. Arlo has been a wonderful addition to the family and his brother Jackson loves having a sibling to play, wrestle, runaround and have treats with.
Bob Hopkins
Bob became involved with Sunshine when he fostered a bonded pair, BG and Gizmo in the summer of 2010. The fostering only lasted a short time before he adopted them. It wasn’t a tough choice as he said, "they were the best dogs ever!" Bob first started volunteering with the dogs, by manning Sunshine booths at events, then added home visits to the mix, "I couldn’t wait to help others become as lucky as I was." In addition to the home visits, he’s also conducted evaluations on dogs in need of rescue and meets the transports. “Seeing the joy on peoples faces when they meet their new family member is incredible!” Bob is also our rescue representative for State of RI.
Bob currently lives in Rhode Island with his SGRR dog, Hunter. Up until COVID, Bob and Duchess (RIP) visited area nursing homes and universities as a therapy dog team.

Adriaan Kasmire
Adriaan began volunteering in 2020 after she adopted Luna from Sunshine, whose gentle soul brought so much joy into their lives that Adriaan felt compelled to give back. She started by conducting phone interviews and home visits with potential adopters, which eventually led to posting Sunshine dogs on Petfinder and Adopt-A-Pet to help them find their forever homes.
Adriaan's passion for the cause extends to her family as well—her daughter also adopted a dog from Sunshine, and Arlo is thriving as the “only child” of a young woman in her twenties who takes him everywhere!
When she is not volunteering, Adriaan works full-time as a Speech and Language Pathologist for Monroe Public Schools. She has a special place in her heart for senior dogs, and hopes that when she retires, she can dedicate even more time to helping dogs in need.

Kathy Kelly
Kathy has been part of SGRR since 2013 when she adopted her tripod named Shelby. Shelby has a golden sister, Stella, and they are best friends. I have been retired since July 2013. In addition to interviewing potential adopters, Kathy has the enjoyable task of following up with adopters to learn how their dogs are settling in with their new family. In turn, Kathy reports back to the SGRR group about the happy tails.
Kathy & her husband live in Massachusetts. She babysits a couple of days a week for her grandnieces and grandnephews. She shares, "I love being retired and I love being a volunteer at SGRR!"

Anne Mele
Retired from Northeast Utilities, Anne volunteers for Sunshine Golden Retriever Rescue doing home visits, phone interviews with prospective adopters and veterinarians, as well as doing follow-ups with new adopters for microchip registration.
After 2 Goldens, Anne and her husband Tony adopted rescue Scout, a 4 yo half retriever, half great dane bundle of fun. With his long legs, Scout funs fast and has become a great watchdog (barks at everything that moves). He has the sweet, goofy and affectionate traits of a golden!
Helping the Sunshine team match goldens with forever homes is a

Mary Montefusco
Mary started to volunteer with Sunshine in 2017. She wanted to give back to other dogs in honor of her dog Madison. Fostering helps to save two dogs at once; one dog stays with you in your home and another dog gets a space in a shelter.
Mary volunteers for phone interviews, vet checks, and dog freedom rides. She helps Sunshine’s senior dogs find forever homes. Mary and Brian live with Dakota who was a foster dog who stayed with them. They hope to continue to foster Sunshine dogs.

Pat Mulligan
Pat began volunteering, soon after she and her husband George adopted Ginger, in 2011. Pat helps with Vet Checks and Phone interviews and both Pat and George have done several home visits. Pat recently joined the transport team, sending out emails to adopters and fosters with details on the upcoming arrival of their new rescue. Living in CT, Pat and George are fortunate to be close to one of the transport stops. They try to be there to meet and greet the adopters/fosters and the dogs as often as possible. What excitement and joy it brings to everyone! Pat and her husband are retired. George enjoys woodworking and golf, Pat gardening and reading and they both enjoy traveling. Pat and George continue to give back to SGRR, who they say brought them so much joy with Ginger.
Kim O'Brien
Kim became involved with the foster portion of SGRR in 2007. After fostering more than a dozen dogs, Kim is now helps with various aspects of Sunshine.
She arranges for volunteers to assist new adopters as they welcome their dogs
at transport stops, answers adopters’ questions, and provides guidance for that big arrival day.
