Check the Chip
We all know that feeling. That scary, heart-stopping moment when you almost lose your dog – they run out the door when you have it open, or they pull and their leash drops out of your hand, or they find the one weak spot in your fence and push right through it. No matter how amazing a dog owner you are, that chance always exists. And with so many of our rescued Goldens having built in prey-drives, no matter how careful you are, no matter how amazing a dog owner you are, that chance of them breaking loose always exists.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1 in 3 family pets will go missing. But there are so many steps you can take to ensure the safety of your dog – one of the most important being microchipping. Dogs with microchips are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners! Because of this, each SGRR dog originating from the south is microchipped and registered to our rescue during the intake process.
However… it only works if you register your dog’s microchip to you upon adoption AND keep your information updated! We bring awareness to how important keeping those details updated is!
The AMVA estimates that only 6 out of 10 microchips are registered. If a chip isn’t registered, or if the information is incorrect or outdated, the likelihood of you being reunited with your furry friend decreases. This is why it is so incredibly important to stay on top of these details. When you bring your SGRR dog home, one of the first things you should do is to call the microchip company (their information will always be included in your dog’s adoption packet) and update the contact information to list your personal details. And make sure that you are not only renewing your dog’s chip registration each year, but make sure any changes to your information get updated in your profile – if you move, or change your phone number, email address, or anything that could prevent someone who finds your dog from reaching you. Most microchip companies have a website where you can create an account and manage the details right there, so you can do it anytime, anyplace!
By staying on top of these details, you will ensure that should anything happen, your dog’s microchip will help lead him right back to you!
