In memory of Maggie...
Maggie, Mags, Magala, Maggie Mae - she answered to all of them. She had a wonderful life - 15 years of touching so many hearts, helping children learn to read, comforting many, & making people smile with her sweet, gentle & kind demeanor. She was a beloved family member, referred to as her person's "sanity," & incredibly intuitive, putting all of what she was into being an exceptional therapy pup. She will be missed terribly, but we know she is pain-free at the Bridge, happy & rolling around in the grass with Kelsey, Harley, Callie, & Grover, with RJ supervising.

Last week we lost our Cody. He was the sweetest boy, with the longest legs, giant paws, and the biggest heart. We'll always be grateful to SGRR and Diane Robbins, his foster mom, for bringing him to us. He became ours on January 21, 2013. He loved the backyard, little kids (okay, so he couldn't help bopping them on the nose), his tiny Yorkie buddy Max, his stuffed goat and pig, his human brothers and their partners, his feline brother, Chester, and us. We're heartbroken, and we'd hoped for longer, but we're left with such sweet memories.

In Loving Memory of our Sammy Boy...
It's in the day to day moments that we miss you the most. When I have my coffee out in the yard in the morning, I miss you laying near me enjoying the quiet morning sounds. When I vacuum and no longer see your gorgeous golden fur on the black edged of the area rug, I miss you. We miss our sous chef in the kitchen when we are preparing meals and we miss the way you did your dinner dance when your turn to eat came. As we look at the Christmas tree, we miss seeing you laying in the warm glow of the lights.
We wish you could have been with us longer, but you accomplished all you needed to in a short span of time and you left your paw print forever etched upon our hearts.

SUNSHINE HONORARY FOSTER MOM
Mae will forever be remembered as Sunshine’s Honorary Canine Foster Mom. Mae was the gentle soul who belonged to and was dearly loved by Sunshine’s dedicated fosters, Cheryl and Paul. Over the years, Mae selflessly and patiently shared her home, her beds, her yard, her toys, and her love with Sunshine’s neediest foster dogs. She was a comfort dog to so many frightened, malnourished, sad dogs who came to her home to begin their journeys to better lives; we have lost count of the number. Mae accepted each and every one of them.
Mae’s “dirty little family secret” was that she had pit bull in her heritage, demonstrating that all dogs are truly big hearts wrapped in love. On October 5, 2017, Mae lost her battle with liver disease at the age of 15. We can only imagine how many grateful Sunshine dogs who crossed before her were at the Bridge to welcome their friend Mae.
Run happy and free, Mae. Sunshine will always be grateful for your gentle kindness, and you will forever be in our hearts.

In loving memory of Ally...
Our beloved Ally passed away peacefully with her people at her side on Wednesday September 6 having spent 13 wonderful years with our family. She came to us on Father’s Day in 2005 after spending two years in southern Alabama abused and neglected living under a turned over dump truck body. If took some patience, quite a bit of peanut butter, brother Benny and some loving to bring her around to be the great dog our friends and family knew. Ally did not possess a mean bone in her body never did she bite a sole, always full of kisses and for her every morning was Christmas morning she truly was a gift to the family. She like every dog had some less than desirable traits barking for no reason, digging large holes and being a messy eater however the love we received, companionship during the workday and the laughter far outweighed the negatives. She took her first swims in the nature preserves in Connecticut, hiked peaks in both the Berkshires and the Adirondacks where she led the life of a quint essential golden retriever.
While sad at this time we are comforted knowing she had a great long dog life. Ally loved her Adirondack camp, walks in the woods and all the friends she made. She truly was a sweetheart thank you Sunshine Golden Retriever Rescue for allowing us to give her a forever home.

For Mariah...2003-2017
It had been nearly a year since our last dog died, and we were ready to adopt again. My daughter, who was then seven (she's now twenty), and I went to a rescue organization in Ludlow, Massachusetts, thinking we were going to meet a Lab mix we'd seen online. But when we got there, the woman took one look at us and said thoughtfully, "Hmm . . . I know you're here to meet the Lab, but I think I have another dog for you." She brought out Mariah, who bounded straight to my daughter and licked her face. That was it--she went home with us. And for the next thirteen years her greeting was the best part of the morning, and her soft fur made the nights that much warmer. ~Sue Warga

In Memory of Jiva - It seems like only last May that I spotted Jiva (then called Jessie) on the SGRR site and fell in love. I always knew she was special, but little did I realize just how special she was until she was gone. Well, I always knew she was special to me, but it’s all the other people she brought into my life and whose lives she impacted that really made it clear to me how influential she was. Over the course of more than 10 years together she introduced me to countless kids who read to her and told her stories if they were too young to read; she “assisted” when I taught yoga to people with mobility issues, always knowing just how to approach and emotionally support each student; bringing smiles to nursing home residents; earning the trust of folks who were uncomfortable around dogs; and just being a wonderful companion. She is missed by many and will always be remembered by all who knew her. I love you, Jiva the diva the Golden Retriva! ~Barbara Sager
In Memory of Luna, whom we adopted from SGRR in 2010 and was a wonderful member of our family for six (too short) years until she succumbed to metastatic cancer. She brought so much joy and love to our lives. We miss her dearly and will hold hold in our hearts forever. Thanks for all that you and SGRR do for dogs like Luna - and families like ours! ~From The Rosenzweig Family |

Riley 8/15/16
In loving memory of a truly loyal friend. Riley wasn't a Sunshine golden alumnus, but he assisted us in helping our rescue babies adjust. His job was done and has traveled over the rainbow bridge to early and suddenly. He will be sadly missed with that quirky personality and silliness. He took another piece of our hearts along with our others. Someone said our pups leave so we can have room to save another in need.

Holley came to us from SGRR in 2007 and immediately became part of our family. Our Golden, 1 1/2 years old at the time, welcomed Holley into our family and they quickly became sisters. Holley loved to chew sticks but mainly loved to be with people. She learned to love the water -- swimming in the ocean and in pools -- and enjoyed walking the neighborhood and the beach. Unfortunately cancer got the best of her. She left us on May 21,2016. She will not be forgotten.

The last known 9/11 search and rescue dog, passed away on 6/6/16. Bretagne (pronounced, "Brittany"), a 16-year-old Golden Retriever, was one of 300+ dogs to search through the rubble for survivors after the attack on the World Trade Center. Back in 2001, Bretagne and her handler, Denise Corliss were new search and rescue graduates when they were deployed to New York shortly after the World Trade Center attacks. The pair joined hundreds of other search and rescue teams from around the world to find survivors at Ground Zero, working 12 hours a day for two weeks straight. Bretagne retired from active duty at age 9, but continued to serve her community, working as a reading assistance dog at an elementary school near her home in Texas.
On Monday, Ms Corliss brought Bretagne to Fairfield Animal Hospital, making the difficult decision to put her down after her dog had stopped eating and experienced kidney failure. Bretagne was met at the hospital by representatives from Texas Task Force 1 and the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department, as well as other agencies, who stood at attention and saluted the K-9 hero as she entered the hospital. Again, they saluted Bretagne as she exited the hospital draped with an American flag and accompanied her in a formal procession to Texas A&M University. Without a doubt, Bretagne was an incredible K-9 hero and will be missed by all. See the touching video from the Houston Chroncile of her hero's goodbye.
