Xander

Our rescue was contacted by a shelter in AL to see if we could help Xander find a new home. This furry Golden Retriever mix was given the thumb's up and we made plans to bring him to the vet clinic where our dogs are cared for. Within a few hours, Lisa (our lead volunteer in AL) was contacted again by the shelter requesting that we take Harry as well as they felt the fellas were bonded. While we hoped to be able to place the boys together, we have decided to increase their chances at adoption by placing the dogs individually.
One of the volunteers in AL shared, "Xander (who weighs about 57 lbs) didn’t wag his tail initially when I took him out of his kennel, but once he got outside, he acted super playful. Then we just sat down and I rubbed his belly and let him get to know me and trust me. I talked to him for a while and reassured him and petted him. After that, he just sat and got some sun and let me pet him. Fast forward a few weeks later and Xander has become much more comfortable and engages more readily. He loves the attention from his human friends and is very curious and friendly about the other dogs who come out in the play yard. He does like ear rubs and belly or chest rubs and also likes to play with toys. He doesn’t jump when excited or when he sees a treat. He has come quite a ways since he first arrived. He’s a real cutie pie!" (Xander's video)
Whatever happened to cause this wonderful boy to become homeless, we will never know but we know Xander is going to thrive in a quiet home with TLC, love, and attention. Xander can be adopted individually or with his friend Harry. Adopting a pair does not mean double the work. Often two dogs are easier than one as they keep each other company and occupied with playtime - and you get double the love and double the fun as you can see in this video!!
Xander has a fuzzy-wuzzy coat and is estimated to be about 2 years old, is up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered, micro-chipped and heartworm negative. He has been given a Proheart-6 injection for 6 months of heartworm prevention and will be ready to travel to the northeast to be directly adopted in mid-May.
If you are approved to adopt through SGRR, have a quiet home, a fenced yard, and your specialty is TLC, please contact Cheryl to be considered to adopt either or both of the boys. If you are not yet approved, visit our website to fill out an application!
Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to take on whatever comes with the dog. It is up to YOU to continue the rehabilitation we have begun. This is what it means to rescue.
