KARLA'S KIDS
On Christmas Day, Miss Karla collapsed in her yard and passed away in her neighbor's arms. Miss Karla lived in a rural, swampy area of Louisiana. Her home was surrounded by wetlands, marshes, bayous, pampas grass, and alligators. She had no children, was not married, and her brother wanted no part of the 20+ dogs she left behind. SGRR took in 6 dogs from this rescue endeavor. These sweet souls are Goldens, Golden mixes, Bassett Hounds, Dachshunds, and combinations of all the aforementioned. They range in ages from 1 to 8 years. We have named them Jesse, Gus, Pam, Jeffrey, Martha, and Danny.

Gus - Happily Adopted!
Update - 02/03/2020: Gus is settling in nicely with his foster mom and dad in the northeast. Foster mom and dad can’t say enough good things about this little guy. His nickname is “cool dude.” Gus spent his first night in his crate and slept the whole night. In fact, when this little guy is tired he will put himself in the crate and go to sleep. Gus even had a field trip to Home Depot where he was the hit of the store.
This guy is not shy and is quite inquisitive. He doesn’t appear to be food motivated, although he eats his food with no issues. Gus also appears to be house-trained. He doesn’t seem to know too much about toys but we are sure that in time Gus will find just how fun they are. Foster mom did say he will respond to a whistle when calling him. Foster mom also shared that Gus is very soft and she can see golden-like feathers on his legs. Although we don’t know the mix of Gus, this “cool dude” is 100% golden-hearted. |
Gus in his foster home

Good things do come in small packages. Check back as we update his bio. But don’t wait too long as I am sure this very sweet boy will find a forever home soon. Perhaps it will be with you...
Gus' Story: This pint-sized pup is thought to be no more than a year old. Gus weighs about 25 lbs and we believe is a Dachshund mix, maybe with Basset Hound...?
Gus is the out-going, social butterfly of the group. He is self-confident and fairly well socialized. When Lisa was giving Jesse attention, Gus barked as if to say, "Hey what about me? Come pet MEEEE!" Oh, and when the cheeseburger that Lisa brought came out, Gus was her new best friend! Unlike many dogs who come from hoarding situations, Gus shows no hesitancy around humans. Our photographer told us "Gus so adorable and wanted attention and love!"
Like Jesse, Gus was one of the lucky kids who tested negative for heartworms, so frequently prevalent in the bayous of Louisiana. It is a MUST that Gus is kept on Heartguard brand preventative for at least 1 year; no generics, no substitutions. After that time, another heartworm preventative can be considered. A physically fenced yard is required for Gus, and for all of Karla's Kids, and a canine companion in his adoptive home is strongly preferred.
Gus has been neutered, brought up-to-date on vaccinations, micro-chipped and is now in a foster home in MA. If your specialty is TLC and you are approved to adopt through SGRR, contact Donna Mayne to be considered to adopt this adorable little man. If not yet approved, please fill out an application to be considered.
Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to take on whatever comes with the dog. It is up to YOU to continue the rehabilitation we have begun. This is what it means to rescue.
