Hi - It's Me... Danny
I was one of Karla's Kids. Our mom passed away and I was so scared. I know everyone was very worried about me because I was so withdrawn, but you can rest easy because I am very happy now.
Today we went to the park. It was my first time ever for taking a walk in the park and I just LOVED it! I also love going on walks by my house with my mom & dad. Sometimes we do little sprints and that is so much fun! Mom & Dad think I am the cutest dog ever and they gave me a new name. Do you want to guess what it is...? It's BEAR! I am their special teddy bear boy!
Life couldn't be any better!! I love my new home and family! Thanks for saving me!
XOXO

Animal hoarding almost always comes from a true love and concern for the animals. Hoarders typically have every intention of caring for or adopting out the animals they take in. Yet the nature of their disease makes it difficult for the hoarder to let go or provide the necessary care the pets need. Typically, the animals are in need of vaccinations, vet care, and spaying or neutering. What was 2 or 3 dogs, now becomes 5 or 6 dogs, and then 8-10 dogs... You get the picture. Thus was the situation with Karla's Kids. It seems this woman truly loved her dogs but, as in most hoarding situations, things got out of control.
Miss Karla lived in a rural, swampy area of Louisiana. Her home was surrounded by wetlands, marshes, bayous, pampas grass, and alligators. On Christmas Day, Miss Karla collapsed in her yard and passed away in her neighbor's arms. Miss Karla had no children, was not married, and her brother did not want any of the dogs. The rest of family feared that the dogs would be shot, killed by gators, run over, or would stave to death over time. St Landry’s Shelter was called in to help secure the dogs and over the course of several days, approximately 25 dogs were brought to safety and taken in by various rescues. SGRR took in 6 dogs from this rescue endeavor. These sweet souls are Goldens, Golden mixes, Bassett Hounds, Dachshunds, and combinations of all the aforementioned. They range in ages from 1 to 8 years. We have named them Jesse, Gus, Pam, Jeffrey, Martha, and Danny. They are in great need of care and TLC. It seems none has ever had a bath. They are not well socialized, and they currently miss the only life they have known, as sad as it was. All need to be spayed or neutered, most have intestinal parasites, and some are heartworm positive. With patience and kindness they will soon learn that life can be so much better! Some are ready now for homes while others will take longer, as they complete heartworm treatment. Meanwhile, we are reaching out for financial help with their care. It is unusual for Sunshine to take in a group of dogs needing this much care, but our commitment to helping Goldens and Golden mixes in need led us to step up and join the rescues who are helping them. One rescue could not do it all. A contribution in any amount, no matter how small, would be so appreciated. Mention “Karla’s Kids,” and we will be sure to use your contribution for their care. Contributions can be made via PayPal or mailed to PO Box 247, Port Washington, NY 11050. Thank you for helping!! |
