Rockstar Roxy

An adoption story from one of our volunteers...

After Maggie went to the bridge we were so sad that we thought that we might take a little break before getting another dog. But.......just five days later we heard about a dog named Agnes who had been a victim of an irresponsible back yard breeder and had basically lived in a crate for 7 years. She was turned into a shelter quite sick and neglected. Thankfully our awesome Lisa saw her and took her into SGRR. After getting her well and through heartworm treatment, Agnes went into the loving foster home of Susan and Pete Davidson for her post heartworm treatment quiet time. We are so grateful to them for all of their guidance.So We heard that SGRR was looking for a forever home for her and that she was coming up on the transport within a few days. Again, our plans to wait before we got another dog went out the window! So on a very cold, damp December 1st we went to the transport to get Agnes. It was the most heartwarming experience seeing all these former orphans getting off the truck into the loving arms of their new, forever homes. We had already agreed that she did not look like an Agnes and that we were going to name her Roxy. The picture on the left is just about 5 minutes after Roxy got off the transport with the cone on her head. She had to have that because she had been paying too much attention to a minor injury that was healing nicely. The first few months were very different than our other dogs. The fact that she had been so isolated was obvious. She would not take food from our hands (that has changed!) and really was kind of a loner. Not the usual "velcro" dog that goldens tend to be. But we just kept working with her and eventually she figured out that she was loved and part of our family. It took months, but Roxy is now the queen of the house. She even greets us at the door which was a huge accomplishment. From the beginning we realized that she loves little dogs. The photo below is taken with her little friend Simon that she adores. The next photo is Roxy kissing a calf at a SGRR fundraiser that she volunteered at with us at Allies' Tack and Feed in RI. I was a second too slow on the camera to catch the actual kiss. The next photo is Roxy in the garden eating fresh lavender buds. She doesn't touch anything else there except the lavender. I guess that she is an herbalist like her mom. The last picture is her first "selfie". We were worried about her having a setback with our move this summer, but it turns out that Roxy adjusted faster than we did! She loves her new home and fenced in yard. Roxy is a sweet, gentle soul and loves to be loved. We are so grateful to SGRR for giving her to us. Love you Roxy (aka Rockstar, Roxanne, Rocket, Butta). You have made our lives fuller just by being you.
