​This handsome beauty is Bader who ended up as a stray in a LA shelter. Bader has a wonderful new home with Sarah and Paul and have worked really hard with Bader to adjust in his new home!

Sarah tells us that it has taken some time for Bader to adjust in his new home. When he first came Bader had a lot of energy and was not sleeping well.  Sarah tells us now that Bader is mostly doing great! He has really settled down and does not seem as anxious. He is spending more and more time with them which they love!

Bader loves people and can never get enough attention, and he also loves food! Which is good, as that works well with training. He is halfway through his training  and he has really made good progress! They are still working on leash manners, dog/car reactivity while walking and learning to like riding in the car, but so far he has done well with everything they have done!

Thank you to Sarah and Paul for working so hard with Bader, he has definitely hit the jackpot!

This is Cole who ended up in a shelter in Louisiana and has a wonderful new home with  Jeff and Dimitri and his many new dog siblings!

Dimitri tells us that to say Cole has brought LOVE into their home would be an understatement. He is a sweet, goofy, loving BIG boy that they believe has figured out what love is!

He loves his brother Dudley  and plays with him a lot, sometimes more than Dudley would like. His other brothers and sisters are still trying to figure him out as he is so big and plays by throwing himself on the other dog!

They could not be more in love with him and are grateful that he came to them!

This is handsome Quincy FKA Frosty who was brought to Baldwin County, AL shelter.  The story goes that someone called the shelter and said they found Quincy and asked if animal control could pick him up, not sure if Quincy was a stray  or he was part of a litter that a family's dog had that the family did not want. It appears that Quincy had suffered a trauma to his left eye and has lost his vision in that eye. Quincy has a wonderful new home with Sharon who just loves him!

Sharon tells us that Quincy is a gem! Sharon brought Quincy to a vet ophthalmologist who believes the blindness in his left eye is congenital as he has no pupil in that eye, nor vision. The condition seems limited to the one eye which is great! Quincy gets around just fine and does not seem bothered by it at all!

Sharon tells me when Quincy first came home, she took a week off from work and they all had all day/training together. It really helped with stair ascending/descending, potty breaks and leash walking. He does great with all of these!

He is in Doggy Day care while she is at work, and he loves it there. He was named "Camper of the Month" this month at day care. Good Boy Quincy! He is very social with other dogs and with people! He did have some wood chewing issues when he had his puppy teeth, but with constant redirection to his chew toys and with his adult teeth that has mostly been resolved.

​It looks like this Alabama dog loves the snow. This cutie is Fergus FKA Gomer  an Irish wolfhound/sheepdog mix ending up in a shelter. Fergus has a wonderful new forever home with Marybeth and Stephen.

Marybeth tells us that an Irish Wolfhound living in New England deserves a good Celtic name and that is how Fergus got his name. They love Fergus, everyone in the family and the neighborhood just love him also!

He is eating well, would probably eat more except the Vet thinks he should lose a few pounds.  Fergus has a 16 year dog sibling that hang out together, but they do supervise them closely as at 16 Rosie deserves her space!

Fergus is a very chill southern gentlemen. Wonderful house behaviors. Loves his walks during the day. He still does not like getting in the car...... if only they could tell us their story of their previous life!

This is Scarlett whose previous owner passed away. Scarlett has a wonderful new home with Michael and Irene. This is Scarlett's story in their words...

"We contacted SGRR because we felt guilty about being so fortunate with our two golden retrievers Percy and Lily. Percy and Lily are five and four years old. They are wonderful dogs and we think they live a great life. They are in the woods hunting for lions, tigers and bears (oh my) everyday. Although, they only find the occasional chipmunk. So, we thought... wouldn't it be a nice thing to do if we could help some less fortunate dog? We have two dogs that provide us with all the exercise, enjoyment and companionship we need or want. So, maybe we could adopt an older dog(one less likely to be adopted) who could just play if they wanted to or just sleep the rest of their days in our sunny family room.

Last year SGRR contacted us about Scarlett. At first report she was thought to be 14 years old, as it turned out she was only a spry 12 years. She had lived with an elderly man who was ill and eventually died in Louisiana. The gentleman's son was going to shoot her as she was old and feeble. The elderly man's caretaker convinced the son to let him take him to a shelter. This started Scarlett's journey. She stayed a few weeks with some wonderful people at the Village Veterinary Hospital in Alabama, we are sure she was sad and scared.

Fast forward a few weeks and on December 19th we picked her up from the transport in Connecticut. She was limping a bit when she came down the ramp, but we had a nice ride home. She was clearly exhausted when she got home and we carried her into the house. The first couple of days she slept a lot and we could see she had some mobility issues. Our Vet said she had floppy joints most likely from past prednisone use. She had a big curve in her back and had  leg weakness and atrophy. She also had severe arthritis. We thought she was deaf as could not hear, but that improved once her ear infections cleared up.

We went to Northampton Vet Clinic and we could not be happier with them. Scarlett received ear drops although she does not like anyone messing with her ears. They used gel in her ears that lasted a month and cleared them up. She was put on joint supplements and a med named Carprofen. After some good days of sleep, food and little walks around the yard she seemed to improve a bit. We had installed a ramp in the garage because she would not walk up even just a few stairs. She had difficulty getting up from lying down so we put in rugs everywhere to give her more traction. After a few weeks we were shocked at how well she was improving so, back to the Vet  we went. We thought, "Ok she is doing better, how much better can she get"? Our Vet added Gabapentin to her regimen and she is like a new dog.

It seemed like she had no socialization with other dogs. She obviously did not know how to play with other dogs. She didn't even know how to play with a ball but, is figuring it out. Poor thing! But, slowly while watching  Percy and Lily she is learning how to have fun. She loves her large rope toy and carries it around trying to play tug of war with Percy and Lily. She now plays well and will try to wrestle with her two new best friends. She went from turning around in the garage when going to the car for our walk in the woods to panting all the way in the car to the forest. She cannot wait to get out of the car when we pull up. She follows Percy and Lily on old fire roads and trails(on a leash of course) sniffing and digging along the way. We initially took it easy with short walks in the snow. The weather is warming and the snow has melted and we have extended our walks. The other day we graduated to climbing our "little mountain". She is getting much stronger and walking so much better. She still cannot figure out why Percy and Lily will sit in a stream or roll in the mud, thankfully!

She seems so happy, and we are thrilled with how far she has come. We went from thinking she was a disaster and now we see she is clearly thriving. She spends her days playing with new brother and sister who she loves in our fenced yard. She likes to sleep on her bed or on the couch. She loves the special treats she gets when she goes to the pee spot. She really likes to chew her hooves, bones and her treats. She definitely likes her food and she wags her tail while we prepare dinner. We cannot wait for nice weather to come and stay. The poor girl came from down south in the dead of winter and we have had a lot of snow. The boating season is around the corner and we look forward to taking her out on the boat."

Wow what an update! Thank you to Irene and Michael for adopting Scarlett and giving her a loving forever home. We think they have done everything possible to make her comfortable. If you are on SGRR Facebook page, Mike and Irene posts video's of Scarlett playing etc. it is just wonderful!

This beautiful girl is Sadie FKA Mercedes, she had lived with her first home for 7 years and then her owners got divorced. Sadie went to two other homes after that but neither was the right fit for her. Sadie has found her forever home with Deb and John.

Deb and John tell us that Sadie has settled into their home extremely well and is happy spoiled(as she should be!) She loves long walks, car rides and lying right by Deb's side!

She is quite energetic and a wonderful guard dog. They love her and they feel they have had her much longer than they have. They could not be happier!

This is Otis FKA Coffee when he was not too sure what that white stuff was. Otis has a wonderful new home with Hadley and Anthony. Otis had been turned in by his former owner for economic reasons.

Hadley and Anthony tell us that Otis is doing really well eating and getting used to their routines. They are waiting to hear back about some obedience classes that they will attend with Otis. They think it will be a good and a wonderful bonding experience for all of them.

This handsome boy is Chance who was a northern turn in. Chance has been adopted by previous adopters Ellen and Jack.

Ellen and Jack tell us that Chance is a very sweet boy and he has never met a person he did not like. He loves to lean into you for some chin rubs. The other day he walked right up to a perfectly strange toddler during the walk, and let the toddler pet him!

He does not seem to like when other dogs are approaching or being overtaken. They walk a good two miles a day and they often meet other dogs, they are thinking that Chance was not socialized with other dogs, but he is as gentle as can be with their 14 year old cats.

He did well with the vet and the groomer. They are starting training this month!

​Another great update!

This is Harry who was found tied out in his backyard in the south, his owner had tragically passed away inside the house and Harry was in terrible condition by the time he was discovered. He had been out there for weeks, during Hurricane Sally and without food and water! Thankfully Harry has a wonderful new home with Annie and Marion.

Annie and Marion tells us that there are not enough words to express just how much they love their sweet and handsome boy Harry. He has been with their family for almost 4 months and he is just thriving. He is a great sleeper, adores his four-legged siblings, loves all creatures and humans, especially his Moms, gobbles his food and sniffs every inch of grass on his walks.

But most importantly, Harry is no longer broken. Of all the dogs that they have rescued from SGRR, he was in really rough shape both mentally and physically. They immediately gave him lots and lots of hugs, patience and kisses (and they have not stopped) and within a week, his tail started wagging! Within a month, he started walking further, had more energy and gained 6 pounds. Now his tail is constantly wagging, and he is starting to play a little with his siblings, weighs 50lbs, his fur is growing in and gives lots of love to Annie and Marion. He is HAPPY and LOVED.

Annie and Marion would like to thank everyone for all they do to bring these amazing dogs into our lives. They are forever grateful! They hope you like the pictures of their sweet, loving and handsome boy Harry!

​This is beautiful Cooper who is making his forever home with Noreen and Lawrence. Noreen tells us this picture is a rare moment of quietude as Cooper watches the sunrise. Note as this past week was St. Patrick's Day you can see the colors of the Irish flag - green and orange on his harness and his leash!

February was a BIG MONTH for Cooper. He marked 4 months living in his forever home, he turned one on the 12th of February and he graduated from puppy kindergarten! Kindergarten was a great experience for Cooper, Noreen and Larry. They learned that Cooper who they thought had no training but as Cooper progressed they realized that he quickly grasped the "inside" task like sit, down, go to mat. However, he had zero leash walking skills, preferred to be outside rather than inside, and never learned that nipping humans is not the way to engage them in play behavior. So they are now signed up for Graduate Puppy Class and doing well! Noreen thinks that Graduate Puppy 2 class may be in their future.

Noreen tells us that she and Larry have raised and fostered Goldens since 1973 and Cooper is by far the most vocal. They are greeted with joyous "dog songs" all day long - upon awakening, coming home for lunch, a new toy, an old toy that was forgotten and rediscovered, and yet he can be beautifully composed, still, and alert - a perfect companion as pictured above.

They are grateful to Sunshine and the for the chance to love and enjoy Cooper and watch him grow into a great dog.
